Back of Truck

The back of truck section starts from either the driver or passenger door and works it’s way around the back and ends at the other side door.  Previously, this area was also known as “Section B”.

This Section is also made for a Class A tractor, but can be used in straight trucks by disregarding the components that are not seen.  Examples would be the “fifth wheel, catwalk, etc.

CDL Pre-trip Section: B (drivers side)

 

  • Horn, Strobe Light, Middle Three ID Lights, Left and Right Side ID Marker/Clearance Lights, Left side 4 Way Flasher, Turn Signal and Rubber Seal:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  Rubber seal is not cut, cracked or frayed.  Has no condensation.  Amber in color.

  • Mirror Mount Assembly:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  

  • Grab Bar:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  

  • Door, Door Latch, Rubber Seal and Hinges:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  Rubber seal is not cut, cracked or frayed.  “Door is not sagging.  Latch opens, closes, and latches properly.  Hinges are in working condition.”

  • Secondary Fuel Tank, Saddle Straps, Cap, Lines, Fittings and Steps:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  Lines have no abrasions, bumps or cuts.  “System is not leaking any diesel.  Steps are clean and clear of any foreign debris, no oil or grease spills.”

  • Outside Back Window and Rubber Seal:

Securement:  Properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  Rubber seal is not cut, cracked or frayed.  Not leaking any water.

  • DOT Stickers:

“Properly mounted and secured, clean and visible.”

  • Slide Bar Assembly:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  

  • Work Light and Assembly:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  Rubber seal is not cut, cracked or frayed.  Has no condensation.

  • Red Emergency Line, Blue Service Line, Fittings, Glad Hands

and Rubber Seals:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  Has no audible air leaks.  “Glad hands are clean and clear of any grease, oil, water or foreign debris.”  

  • Green Electrical Line, fittings, Plug, Plug In and Prongs 

Securement:  Properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged, cut or frayed No exposed wires.  “Prongs are all present, Plug, plug in and prongs is clean and clear of any foreign debris.  Air and electrical lines not dragging and has enough slack for turns.”

  • Cat Walk and Frame:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged or twisted.  “Frame has no re-welds, excessive drilling or holes.  Cat walk is clean and clear of any foreign debris.”

  • Adequate spacing:

“There’s adequate amount of spacing between the header board and the back of the cab to allow for turning.”

  • Skid Plate and Apron:

Securement:  Properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged or twisted.  

  • Platform, Mounting Plate and Mounting Bolts:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged or twisted.  Has no re-welds.  

  • Release Lever, Spring, and Safety Latch:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged or twisted.  Has no re-welds.  Release lever is in the lock position.

  • Fifth Wheel, Clevis Pins and Tongues:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  “Fifth wheel and clevis pins are properly greased.  There is no space, gap or lighting between my apron and fifth wheel.  Throat is free and clear from any foreign debris.  From this view I can see the Locking Jaws around the Shank.  There’s 2 ways to tell if the trailer is connected to the tractor properly, visually or a tug test.”

  • Locking Jaw:

Securement:  Properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  

  • Head, Shank and Kingpin:

Securement:  Properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  

  • Drive Shaft *(grab it and shake it) and Carriage:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  “Has no re-welds.  Is clean and clear from any foreign debris.  Knuckles and U Joints are not broken, cracked or damaged.  They are properly greased and secured.”

  • ¼ Fender:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  Covers the width of the duals.

  • Spring Mounts, Auxiliary, Leaf and

Torque Springs, Spring Keepers and U Bolts  (Suspension System):

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged, misaligned, missing or shifted.  “If ¼ or more of any leaf is missing, vehicle will be put “out of service”.  Nipples and Rubber Bushing are not broken, cracked or damaged.  They are properly greased.”

  • Air Line and Fittings  (Brake system):

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  No abrasions, bumps, cut or audible leaks.

  • Brake Chamber and Clamps (Brake system):

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged, smashed or leaking any air.

  • Push Rod, Clevis Pin, Cotter Pin, Slack Adjuster and Rubber Bushings (Brake system):

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

I Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  Nothing missing.  Bushings not worn.  “With the tires chocked, brakes released and pulled by hand, the push rod should not more than 1 inch or exceed a 90 degree angle.”

  1. Brake pad and Drum  (Brake system):

*Point to Brake Pad and Brake Drum.

Securement:  Properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not Broken, Cracked or Damaged.  “There is no Grease, oil, re-welds, exposed rivets, metal shavings or foreign debris.  Brake pad is NO less than ¼ of an inch thick.”

  • TIRES I.C.D.:

“Inner and Outer tire walls have no serious abrasions, bumps or cuts.  Not leaking any air.  Tire has even wear.  Rear tires must have at least 2/32 of an inch tread depth.  Can’t be mismatched.  Can be recapped.  I can check the pressure with a tire gauge.  Proper inflation is 105 psi.  No rubbing which could cause a fire.  Spacing between tires is clean and clear of any foreign debris”

  • Valve Stem and Cap:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.   Not missing or leaking any air.

  • Inner and Outer, Inner and Outer Rim, Lug Nuts and Wheel Studs:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  Has no repairs, re-welds, rust trails or shiny threads indicating a loose nut.

  • Axle Seal:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.   Not leaking any gear oil.

  • Vent Holes:

“Free and clear of any of any foreign debris that could cause a tire fire.” 

  • Mud Flap and Safety Pin:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged or missing.  “Mud flap should cover the width of the duals and ¾ from the height of the tire to the ground.”

  • Rear Differential, Filler plug and Drain Plug:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged or smashed.   Not leaking any gear oil.

  • Reverse Buzzer, Electrical Lines and Fittings:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  Wires not cut, cracked, frayed, no corrosion or exposed wires.

  • Rear Light Assembly: at 

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  Wires not cut, cracked, frayed, no corrosion or exposed wires.  

“4 Way Flashers, Turn Signals, Brake lights and Running Lights has no condensation and is red in color.  Reverse Lights has no condensation and is white in color.  Reflectors around lights are present has no condensation.”

  • License Plate:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  “It is clean and visible.  Registration is current and valid.”

  • Adequate Spacing:

“There’s adequate amount of spacing between the back of the tractor and landing gear to allow for turning.”

CDL Pre-trip Section: B (Passenger side)

  • As I Inspected…

“As I inspected the 4 way flasher, turn signal, mirror mount assembly, grab bar, door, door latch, rubber seals, hinges and steps on the driver side, I would inspect the same way on the passenger side.”

  • Primary Fuel Tank, Saddle Straps, Cap, Sending Unit, Lines and Fittings:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged.  Has no abrasions, bumps, cuts or exposed wires.  System not leaking any diesel.

  • Rain Flap, Smoke Stack, Exhaust Pipe, Heat Shield and Bracket:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not broken, cracked, damaged or twisted.  “No signs of black soot indicating an exhaust leak.”

  • As I inspected….

“As I inspected the ¼ panel, brake system, suspension system, inner and outer, inner and outer rim, lug nuts, wheel studs, axle seal, vent holes, valve stem, cap, inner and outer, inner, outer and upper tires, mud flap and safety pin on the driver side, I would inspect the same way on the passenger side.”
