In Cab Inspection

The best way to understand the In Cab Inspection is to come up with a flow.  Find a starting point and work your way through the inside of the truck, making sure nothing is missed.  Below is our sample flow that you could use as a reference.

(This is a Sample version but feel free to create your own flow)

  • CHOCK THE WHEELS
  • PUT ON SAFETY BELT
  • SAFE START:

“I’m going to perform a safe start.”  Depress the Clutch.  Place the gearshift in Neutral.  Start the engine then slowly release the clutch.

  • ABS LIGHT:

“The ABS light came on and went off indicating it is in working condition and in operational range.”

  • SAFETY BELTS:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and tightly mounted to o side of the cab.

Condition:  No Cuts, Cracks or Frays.  “Belt gives proper tension.  Adjusts and latches on and off properly.”

**Safety Equipment:

  • FUSE BOX EQUIPPED WITH CIRCUIT BREAKERS:

Securement:  Properly mounted and secure.

Condition:  Not Broken, Cracked or Damaged.  “I have one spare fuse per amp.”

  • FIRE EXTINGUISHER, NEEDLE AND PIN:

Securement:  Properly mounted and secure.

Condition:  Not Broken, Cracked or Damaged.  “Needle is in the green indicating that it is fully charged.  It was manufactured in 2014 and is good for 12 years.  Must be inspected annually and has been inspected this year.  Fire Extinguisher is rated for use on class B and C type fires.  Class B for flammable liquids and Class C for energized electrical equipment.”

  • 3 REFLECTIVE TRIANGLES:

“Not Broken, Cracked or Damaged.  Not leaking any Sand.”

  • WINDSHIELD, BACK WINDOW, DRIVER SIDE WINDOW AND QUARTER WINDOW, PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW AND QUARTER WINDOW:

Securement:  All Rubber Seals are present and the windows are properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not Broken, Cracked, Damaged, Cut, Frayed or leaking any water.  “They are clean and clear of any illegal tint or stickers with the exception of the safety check sticker which is current and valid.”

  • WINDOW CRANK:

Securement:  Properly mounted and secure.

Condition:  Not Broken, Cracked or Damaged.  “Rolls the windows up and down properly.”

  • DRIVER PLANE AND CONVEX MIRROR, PASSENGER PLANE AND CONVEX MIRROR AND RUBBER SEALS.

Securement:  All rivets, screws, nuts and bolts are present and properly mounted to the door.

Condition:  Not Broken, Cracked or Damaged.  Rubber is not Cut, Cracked or Frayed.  “They are clean and properly adjusted so I can see the rear of my trailer.”

  • WINDSHIELD WASHER AND WIPER ASSEMBLIES:

Securement:  All nuts and bolts are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not Broken, Cracked or Damaged.  “Wipers have proper tension and is flush against the glass.  Blades are not cut, cracked or frayed.  Washer Fluid lines have no abrasions, bumps or cuts.  Not leaking any washer fluid.”  (Squirt water and run wipers)

  • STEERING WHEEL:

“Should not have more than a 10 degree or 2 inch play on a 20 inch steering wheel”

  • SERVICE HORN AND AIR HORN:

Blow Service horn.  Blow Air Horn.  Both are in working condition.

**LIGHTING INDICATORS

  • LEFT TURN SIGNAL   (Turn on and off)

RIGHT TURN SIGNAL  (Turn on and off)

4 WAY FLASHERS  (Turn on and off)

HIGH BEAMS  (Pull indicator stick up)

RUNNING LIGHTS  (Click to middle)

LOW BEAMS  (Click to bottom)     “All indicator lights are in working condition.”

  • GUAGE NEEDLES:

“All needles are present and Not Broken, Cracked or Damaged.”

  • OIL GUAGE:

“Current Oil reading is ________ psi.  Normal operating range is between 35 and 75 psi.

  • TEMPERATURE GUAGE:

“Current reading is ________ degrees Fahrenheit.  Normal operating range is between 180 and 210 degrees.”

  • ACKNOWLEDGE TACHOMETER, SPEEDOMETER AND FUEL GUAGE.
  • VOLTMETER:

“Should be in the green between 12 and 14 volts.”

  • AIR SUPPLY PRESSURE GUAGE:

“Current reading for the Primary and Secondary is ________ psi and ________ psi.  Air Governor cuts in at 100 psi and cuts out at 115 psi.  At that point the Air system is fully-charged with a purge.”

  • HEATER/DEFROSTER:

Securement:  Knobs are present and properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not Broken, Cracked, Damaged or leaking air.  (Put it on mix, turn knob to red, turn it on and run hand along vents)  “Heater and Defroster is in working condition.”

  • TRACTOR PROTECTION VALVE AND PARKING BRAKE VALVE”

Securement:  Valves are present and is properly mounted and secured.

Condition:  Not Broken, Cracked or Damaged.  No leaks.

  • CLUTCH:

Securement:  Properly mounted and secure.

Condition:  “Has no less than ¾ inch but no more than 2 inch play.

  • Floor:

“Is clean and clear of any loose objects or foreign debris that could get caught behind the pedals.”

  • SEAT:

“My driver side has an Air ride seat that moves up, down, forward and backward.  All nuts and bolts are present and tightly mounted to the floor.  The passenger side seat is a fixed seat and is also mounted to the floor.”
