Permit Tests

A CDL license allows you to drive a vehicle that has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.

The main difference between a Class A and Class B is the trailer.  A “Class A” license allows you to tow a trailer with weights over 10,000 pounds while a “Class B” allows you to tow below 10,000 pounds.

Minimum “Class B” permit tests:

General Knowledge test
Air Brake endorsements test

Minimum “Class A” permit tests:

General Knowledge test
Air Brake endorsement test
Combinations endorsement test

Other Endorsement tests:

Passenger Transport Endorsement (P)
School Bus Endorsement (S)
Doubles/Triples Endorsement (T)
Tanker Endorsement (N)
Hazmat Endorsement (H)
Tanker/Hazmat Combo Endorsement (X)

TEST TIPS

  • In the CDL Manual, study sections 1,2 and 3 for the General Knowledge test.
  • Study sections 5 and 6 for the Air Brakes endorsement.
  • Use Practice tests online or get a CDL prep app on your phone to practice.  Once you start reaching a 90% or more pass rating on these practice tests, you are probably ready to go.
  • Don’t  study the pre-check sections ( 11 and 12) until you pass your permit.  This may confuse you as you prepare for your permit.
  • During the test, you will see a SKIP button somewhere on the screen.  Use this button and send the questions you don’t know to the back.
  • Use the Test to take the Test.  Some answers may reveal themselves while taking the test so it is a good idea to use the skip button.

Got your Permit, NOW WHAT?

The Road test consists of 3 parts:

Don’t delay too long as your Permit is good for 6 months.  You can renew it one time, but after that you need to re-take all the exams.
